Always milder at the beginning of winter than the middle.

Don't expect the temp to drop anywhere near that cold in November or December.

Shenanigans! The question clearly states that the lowest temperature is "excluding Alaska" but the outcome of -58 occurred in Chalkyitsik, Alaska. -40 should be the correct answer.

Early in the year is the most likely time to see temps this low.

Can't buck Starman. I used to live in Minneapolis and I hardly remember it getting to 40 below upstate until January/February. Even with climate change, I see no reason to go against history on this one.

February is typically the coldest month of the year, followed by January. Barring some crazy rebound effect of global warming [well, it did snow today in Philadelphia for the first October accumulation in over 30 years... :-) ], it won't get close to 40 below by the end of the year.

Mt. Washington has highest wind speeds.

New Hampshire is on the coast and a small enough state that Mt. Washington is relatively close to the Atlantic. That helps moderate temperatures significantly compared to the Northern middle part of the country.

A quick search shows a Nov. record low of -54. I think it's safe to say Decembers are usually colder than Nov., and this is going to be a frigid year. Still no sun spots.

When you are up in the Iron Range in Minnesota, you can see why this place gets so cold. The high pressure systems seem to settle right there and it get awfully cold.

Provided the extent of global warming around the globe, and the severe extent of climate change we have all witnessed in the past decade, I would expect the coldest temperature to head upwards in the coming years. The summers are hotter and the winters arent as miserably cold even in the coldest parts of the world.

While I believe in global climate change, and I believe humans are causing it, I don't believe in global warming, only polar warming.
